OVERVIEW

Research Background

1. What is ALS?

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the selective degeneration of motor neurons. The prevalence is approximately 6 per 100,000 people. ALS leads to the gradual weakening of muscles, resulting in the deterioration of motor functions, and eventually causing paralysis of muscles throughout the body, including the respiratory muscles. Currently, there is no established cure for ALS, and the only treatments available are medications that can slow the progression of the disease in some patients. Therefore, the development of definitive treatments is urgently needed.

2. What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the gradual loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra of the midbrain, leading to impaired motor function. The prevalence is approximately 1% among individuals aged 65 and older. Symptoms include tremors in the hands and feet, muscle rigidity, and bradykinesia (slowness of movement). It is challenging to completely halt the progression of symptoms, highlighting the need for improved treatments and the development of new therapeutic options.

In this study, we plan to evaluate the efficacy of our proprietary U-Factor® solution in treating and slowing the progression of ALS and Parkinson’s disease.

TIMELINE

Initiation of Basic Research on ALS and Parkinson's Disease Using Stem Cell Culture Supernatant

In this study, we plan to provide U-Factor® solution to The Jikei University School of Medicine to conduct various basic experiments related to ALS and Parkinson's disease. As mentioned above, we aim to verify the efficacy and potential of U-Factor® solution in treating and slowing the progression of ALS and Parkinson's disease, both of which currently lack effective treatment options.
